Media's Puppets

Overtime media have taken control of our thoughts, our feelings and almost everything which once belonged to us. Childern to older people, teens to adults they all under media's influence and act like they are puppets of media. Is it ok to let media influence us?

  1. I agree that the media is definetly controlling what is being ''let out'' to the public and what we are supposed to watch. But we are just as much part of the problem as they are, since we keep funding the media and demanding this or that which in turn forces them to continue what they are currently doing.

  2. I believe we shouldn't let the media influence, but we can learn from the media. For example, find out what's going on in the world around us, learn about the economy. But having it influence us, that's what makes us different from others. For example we may see something in the media and it'll make us think one way, compared to another person who may go against what you believe. The fact that the media has so much power is incredible, that's how Hitler came into power through the media. (That's what I believe) And he managed to make Germany THE best countries, with the best economy, until he abused the power. And decided to kill people!

  3. It is not ok to allow the media to influence us, but most of the time we get influenced without realizing it. A lot of the things we see and hear on TV are controlled. We are not always exposed to what is factual, and what is not. I agree with both Nissant, and Dr. Phill (dw i wont expose you) that we fund the media, and we are influenced differently due to our personalities.

  4. We will always be affected by media in some form or another. The very fabric of our being is a manifestation of the societal, cultural, and media aspects that we’ve encountered throughout our lives. However, as we grow older, our ability to discern the right from the wrong grows, and our rationale grows with it. We grow to be more sceptic, and our ability to think critically also grows. We consume media in its purest forms less and less. However, our capitulation to media in general is just a part of our human condition. Unless we can change our brain chemistry, there is no possible way to not consume media in some form, other than to enjoy solitary confinement for the rest of your life.

  5. It’s definitely not okay for media to influence us, considering that it has taken over our thoughts, feelings, and almost everything. We should behave like people with intellect and not like a horde of sheep! Instead it should be us influencing the media and not vice versa.
Realistically though, not everyone has the same rationale similar to a genius like me( Im just joking) so what must be done is to increase media literacy in the general public starting with children and youth.

  6. The media will influence us one way or another because we are exposed to so many variations of it. However, it is important that we choose who and what we see influences us, because not only are there negative influences, there are positive ones as well. Watching the news like Nisant said and learning about what conditions people are in can help us make changes in our life such as wasting less resources and helping others, this way we appreciate what we have a lot more.
We know now if not before, that all media are constructs. Everything portrayed in the media contains a message. Its up to us to decode those messages and think about what it is we are consuming and act upon what is right.

  7. It is not okay to let the media influence us at all but we are so into the "norms" that they put into our minds to control us. They know what will sell and they know how to sell it.
The media knows how to brainwash people and get them to believe in what they show us. We are definitely the puppets of media.

Girls want to start dieting, be skinny, and buy the new products in line that they saw Jessica Alba advertising on Tv. Guys on the other hand have been using media as a source to their sex education. Most of the teenagers have start believing that it is normal for teenagers to have sex after considering the fact that almost every single movie has some kind of sexual contect involved.

We are unaware that what we see and how much we see is being tracked. In our technological world, nothing is hidden and privacy is a major concern as we all know. If the majority of the households watch a specific channel, companies will give that channel more money in order to put the commercials for their products between commercials. This is a very precise technique used by the media to increase consumer demand.

  9. Nice responses guys :). Media is really controlling everything around us, they want to look at things a certain way but we are unable to do that because media doesn't agree with us and doesn't want us to look at those things in that way. The fact is that unless we make send a messege to media that enough is enough and we won't take in no more that's the only way we can change "Media Influence on us".

  11. It seems that everyone has agreed on the common basis that we shouldn't be influenced by the media and I for one agree, but I want to add something. Most of the comments are about not fitting into the many generalizations and stereotypes that the media has put forth, but I ask you, who is the media?

Obviously, you will say its the many ways in which we derive and absorb our information which shapes our ideas, perceptions etc. These include newspapers, television news shows, and other forms of media on the internet such as Twitter or Facebook, but we also fail to notice the most obvious form of media, ourselves. Whatever we feel, whatever our beliefs, ideals, principals and morals are, we project those as being the "norm" and we use these different forms media as a way to expand on our own ideas on how we view the world, like I'm doing right now.

So when people say don't be influenced by the media, we should really be saying, don't be influenced by someone else's ideas, although many people are oblivious to this. In the end, we're all going to be influenced, one way or another, whether it is the new Iphone or a new Call of Duty game.

  12. Even though i agree with what you have said but i still want to add something to it. It's us who's going to control what we absorb and from where we absorb and media have really made it more difficult to realize either what they are giving out it better than what someone else it giving out.

  13. Often time messages from the media are very subliminal so its difficult to realize what your being fed by the media. You might even mistaken it for your own thoughts. Its important to develop critial thinking skills to sheild yourself from the media. By Halimo
