It seems television has had a massive change over the years. The days of classic family sitcoms and wholesom commercials .
Television back in the day was full of nice relaxing sitcoms that the whole familywould gather around and enjoy together. There are the few sitcoms today that do the same but they are very few. Now television seems to have evolved into mostly reality TV shows, where an american celebrity brings a regular person along with them to see how their life is. As for commercials, back in the day you used to see a stay-at home or little old lady advertising washing detergent or dishwashing liqud to young women bouncing around selling underwear.
How else do you think television has changed over the years, how does it affect the public viewers?
Television has changed dramatically over the years, due to the evolution of technology. Now a days you can pause, skip commercials, and have more channels available to view. This I believe is influencing the viewers tremendously, because the media you are viewing, is telling you what to buy,how to dress and for some how to act. Also the picture you have is great example of how too much of tv is physically affecting the viewers.
ReplyDeleteI love the pic!
ReplyDeleteT.v has changed drastically, in a an article that i had read awhile ago it asked the intriguing questions to parents, who's raising your child the t.v or you. Parents don't monitor what their kids watch. For instance we have evolved from freindly cartoons such as barny, tom and jerry to violence with yu-gi-oh, pokemon and totally spcice.
The Advertisment has also greatly affected the amount of advertisment with diets, plastic surgery, clothes and makeup in order to be the next cover girl.
Since our main focus has been on gender roles in the media, I think the changes in television has only enforced the current stereotypes. You said that commercials currently show women selling underwear, i'm presuming half-naked because that is what I see. The changes in television now only reinforces how the media believes the roles and characteristics of men and women in society today are.
ReplyDeleteWell, it all comes down to controversy in the end. The media's evolution is directly proportional to its exploitation of the susceptibility of its consumers to controversial media texts. This becomes quite obvious when we view any form of media today; television, music, movies, etc. Controversy draws attention, attention draws consumers, and consumers fuel the economy for the corporate companies. And repeat.
