As you all know Tuesday is the due date for the movie deconstruction assignment. I get the impression that some of you are a bit unsure about what types of things you should be commenting on. Remember my Twilight example? In this scene we discussed how the circling camera, creepy stalker body language and music all contribute to the message that Bella (Pants) is powerless and trapped. Therefore, it reinforces the notion that women, in general, are controlled by men. The dominant discourse here is that women should be equal parts scared and excited by men.
I can't comment on the films that you watched in order to complete the assignment, but I will give you a Harry Potter example that made me raise my eyebrow: Harry, Ron and Hermione have just escaped an attack at the wedding. Hermione suggests that they change clothes and says that she has "had the essentials packed for days" in her ultimate mom purse. Cut to Ron complaining that Hermione packed the jeans he doesn't like. Wha? Presumably, Harry and Ron are grown men (if the continuous close-ups of their stubble are any indication), so why does it fall to Hermione, the only girl in the group, to pack everyone's clothes?
Also, here are a few links (some I've used in class). Feel free to use them if you are stuck for something to write about:
1. Interesting article on gay men feeling the pressure to "butch up."
2. A new trailer for the Green Hornet that could use some deconstructing.
3. The Kardinal Offishall song I suggested you subvert.
4. The new Milestones promotion I mentioned today.
Have a lovely weekend!
