I was just on Tumblr, yes I no it’s almost 1am BUT I randomly saw this and thought id post it here.
What do you people think? Because the message I’m getting is that boys are gay if they’re scared of wasps???
I don't think that "being scared of wasps = being gay". I think that the attribute of a boy/man being scared is feminine. Personally I don't think that's true. It's just how the media portrays this image. For example in a show or even in reality, when a male shows that he is scared usually the people around him call him a sissy or you know what. It's kind of like the Laura Richardson peice we read when she discusses the 6 perceptions. Unfortunately males tend to use feminine words to put down or make fun of a guy. Overall I think this comic is trying to be "macho" and don't be gay or you are going to dissapoint your father, family, friends, and probably society.
People have the general idea, if someones gay they think a like girl, therefore if a man acts like a stereotypical girl they are assumed to be gay. I'm pretty sure this comic is just for humorous purposes, but it does show that society expects their men to be "manly" and tough, while women must be scared "girly" characters..
I agree with you both, even this is just a comic it shows us societys expectations like Rahul says . We can see this in a lot of movies as well that when the guy is scared of bugs its funny and he's called girly but when a girl is scared its normal .
This has got to be the lamest depiction of ''homosexuality being weak'' that I have seen to date. How does being scared of wasps constitute homosexuality?...
No I completely agree with aimon, how many times have you seen people afaraid of something only to be told "stop being scared you gay lord?"Though it may seem extreme it really isint as far fetched a depiction as we may fell. It displays "man up" which basically shows that if you are not being a "man" you are either gay or a woman, how unfortunate! anyways I think you people should dig deeper than surface value before you comment
I agree with Olivia, and in todays society young boys are facing challenges. Most of the time an older male would say, " stop crying you sissy", and the little boy would try not to do things that would be seen as being weak and not manly enough. They pretty much have to live up to the stereotype that men are strong, and portray no emotion, otherwise face being called gay or a girl.
I agree with all of you ^.Its ridiculous how being scared of insects (if you're a boy) makes you gay but if you're a girl its perfectly fine; normal in fact. Consider this: If being scared of a wasp such as in this case, makes the boy less manly, then does a girl being scared of kittens make her less womanly/girly? No. You would automatically assume she just doesn't like them. It's wrong that the media targets males this way.
A man is suppose to be strong, that is what the media tells us and our grandparents who always talk about how brave they were when they were young. They also want the same from us. Long time ago, men use to go outside and hunt animals and they all had to be brave in order to feed their family. It is a little different these days because you don't have to be extra brave since you are not going out in the wild to hunt for food. So the society has this image that men are suppose to be strong and shouldn't be scared of anything. When that child gets scared and tells his father, he gets really angry because he was told that men are suppose to be brave and shouldn't get scared of anything. What ever his father was told by the society, that is how he is going to behave like. The society also in a way tells that if a boy, gets scared of something he is considered gay. This is put into many people's mind and that is why someone made that comic.
Halimo Traditional values teach us that men are never, NEVER ever suppose to show any sign of weakness. such as being scared but of course since females are perecieved as weak its pretty much expected
