The representation of different ethnic groups in the Media

In this world, there are many countries, and some countries speak the same language. There are many different religions, and different people. Even though religions are different, all religions say to treat others as you would like to be treated. In Canada, especially Toronto is a multicultural city, and that’s on of the things that Toronto is known for. However, in Toronto and especially the media, they show some racism towards different ethnic groups.

In Toronto, and other cities, there are violence, and people that break the law. People go to jail for committing their crimes. However, if you ask people in the city of Toronto about which ethnic group commits more crimes in the city, they would say black people. If you turn your TV on, and watch the news, you here news like shooting occurred in the city, and the suspect is a 6.4 black male…ete, or you here that a white female was killed in her house. I have no problem with the media stating the news. However, why do the media emphasize on things that happen to white people? Why when a white person is kidnapped, the police, and the Media tries hard to find that person? Why the media doesn’t tries to find the criminal when a black person is shot? These questions could all have only one answer, and it could be that the media in the city of Toronto could be racist.

The media should demonstrates news in the city equally no matter what who is in the news. This is a problem that goes back to the time that Martin l. King tired to bring down racism. He succeeded, but even 2010; there is still racism in the Media.

Please comment on my post, and answer the following questions?

What can we as a society in the city of Toronto help bring down racism in the media?

  1. Well for the most part, as you said, there are many MANY countries in the world the have unique cultures and ways of dealing with change.
Canada as much as the government and individuals try to reduce and stop racism it still continues, in a less violent and present way, but none the less continues. Most of this can be looked at and understood as almost all of toronto's population is international, people from parts of europe, asia, Afrika & south america; what im trying to say is thet because of different cultures people have different views and beleifs on different people, though some may ber completely wrong it is their individual culture and traditions that seperate you from the next person.

  3. I think that the reason black people are emphasized in the media for commiting crimes is because statistically black males commit more crimes than white males. Although it is just a statistic and it's a stereotype that black males commit crimes it shouldn't be viewed that way in the media or society. It is possible that the media in Toronto is racist but we as a society have to help as a community to overcome these stereotypes.

  6. Although there are a lot of thing we have to do to bring down racism so does the media. The things we can do to fix this problem are by proving ourselves that we aren't just another statistic or stereotype. We have to educate ourselves and the people around us. We have to lower down crime rates by helping the community out and opening sports facilities so the youth can engage in something productive rather than the violence going on in the streets. We have to show and prove to the media and society what we are capable of. We have to start taking advice from our elders because they've been here longer than us and we can learn a lot from them. There are many things that can be done to fix this problem and the only thing missing from some of us is patience and commitment and hopefully we can overcome this racism in the media.
